Development through iterations
Early in the development process we were faced with a key challenges when building the game:
How to present recipes for the player in a way that is easy to comprehend in an increasingly chaotic environment?
Initially, we considered placing recipe boards within the game environment to avoid cluttering the interface. However, after sketching it out and building a quick prototype, we realized that it would be too difficult to read the details on the recipes. Therefore, we chose to show the recipes using interface elements on top of the gameplay. This had the benefit of creating a bigger contrast between the gameplay and the information needed for the player.
However, this led to another challenge in the presentation. As a key design goal was to have the game progress into chaos over time, I wanted to avoid presenting everything to the player at once. To solve this challenge, I built a dynamic interface system that made it possible to add recipes to the screen as the player unlocked them through the game. This system was built using Unity's UI Toolkit, a collection of features and tools made for interface development in Unity Games using C#. In the gallery above you can see some of the different iterations the game went through as development went on.
