Development through iterations

Early in the development process we were faced with a key challenges when building the game:
How to present recipes for the player in a way that is easy to comprehend in an increasingly chaotic environment?
Initially, we considered placing recipe boards within the game environment to avoid cluttering the interface. However, after sketching it out and building a quick prototype, we realized that it would be too difficult to read the details on the recipes. Therefore, we chose to show the recipes using interface elements on top of the gameplay. This had the benefit of creating a bigger contrast between the gameplay and the information needed for the player.

However, this led to another challenge in the presentation. As a key design goal was to have the game progress into chaos over time, I wanted to avoid presenting everything to the player at once. To solve this challenge, I built a dynamic interface system that made it possible to add recipes to the screen as the player unlocked them through the game. This system was built using Unity's UI Toolkit, a collection of features and tools made for interface development in Unity Games using C#.

In the gallery above you can see some of the different iterations the game went through as development went on.

From digital sketch to final interface

Rapid digital sketches made it possible to quickly get a feeling of the different elements. The sketches were made in Miro and Illustrator, using shapes, icons and emojis.

In the example to the right, I learned that we needed to provide some extra information related to systems surrounding the game, like 'P' to pause, which is added in the final version.

Interaction: Use the handle in the image above to experience the difference between the first sketch of the tutorial screen and the final version used in the game.

The main purpose of the digital sketches was to get a feeling of composition and visual hierarchy before spending any time building it in code.

In the example to the left, you can see the difference between first draft and the final version of the game shop. We didn't manage to include the Speed Upgrade originally envisioned, but otherwise, the general design carried through to the final game.

Reception & Accolades

Potion Panic took part in the game jam "Game Develop Month 2023" a competition where developers had a month to complete a small game project. The game ended up winning the game jam, among 107 other game entries reaching a top 10 position in all categories and even ranking 1st in Sound Design.

Really fun game! The assets and art are all super cute. I made it to level 10 but I didn't unlock all the upgrades. Excited to see where you take this and what you work on next!
